Why is Having Diversity in a College Setting so Important?

So why is diversity in college important? For starters, many schools claim that cultural diversity in the classroom promotes a healthy sense of competition and sparks innovation. By bringing people together from different backgrounds, new and creative ideas can be fostered because not everyone thinks in the same way.

Prepare Yourself for the Real World: Diversity is Everywhere

Furthermore, by interacting with people outside of your usual social circles, you help to better prepare yourself for the workforce. The real world is a very diverse place and if you do not partake in experiences that include people that are different from yourself, you may have a hard time adjusting to the differences of other people. Being able to get along with and appreciate people’s differences is a characteristic that is truly necessary to be successful in today’s global marketplace.

How You Can Seek Cultural Diversity on Your College Campus

When searching for diversity on college campuses, you should start by looking at the various programs and student organizations your college offers. Colleges and Universities with active religious and multicultural groups usually have a larger mix of people from different backgrounds than those with only a couple of these groups. You should also look at the types of volunteer and study abroad programs that are available to you. Finally, schools that have classes dealing with gender roles, global studies and world religions will likely offer a more diverse atmosphere than those that don’t offer such coursework.

What Does College Diversity Mean to Me?

U.S. News did a study on college diversity rankings. In this study the magazine looked at the overall mix of groups and the proportion of minority students (not including international students). Through this study they found that the top three national universities with the most cultural diversity are Rutgers University, Stanford University and the University of Houston.
