Sociology Degree

Sociology is essentially the study of humans and how they interact with each other. Sociologists are continuously studying how people behave and why people and societies behave the way they do. This type of research is accomplished by studying different types of groups people join such as businesses, religions, political parties, and other interest groups. While earning a Sociology Degree, you will study human interaction as well as behavioral traits within society, and hopefully qualify yourself for a career as a sociologist. Some of the courses that you may take while earning a Sociology Degree include sociology research design, sociology theory, statistics, as well as many research and writing courses. Specific sociology classes might include Self and Society, Sociology of Gender, Political Sociology, Sociology of Genocide, or Cultural Sociology. There are also a number of specializations in the sociology industry where you can study a specific sub-set of people, such as women only or Africans only. If sociology interests you, but you are not sure that you want to pursue a career as a sociologist, you will also be qualified for a number of other career types, such as a career in the criminal justice industry as a corrections officer, a career in government administration, policy analysis or homeland security, a career in research and planning at a governmental planning department, research firm or public opinion research firm, or even a career in education as an administrator, educational researcher or alumni relations to a college or university. You can choose to earn a Degree in Sociology from a Certificate in Sociology which may only take up to one year for completion all the way to the pursuit of a Master’s in Sociology which will require a Bachelor’s Degree and most likely an additional two years of schooling. All levels of Sociology Degrees are available at many online colleges as well as traditional colleges around the United States.
