Path to Career Success Knowing how to achieve career goals is really important in helping you get to where you want to be in life. However, whether you are goal setting for personal or career reasons, the key to not feeling as though you are drifting from one day into the next without ever getting anything done is to make sure you set your goals and write them down.

 

1. The First Step to Achieving Your Career Goals: Set a Goal

If you don’t set goals then knowing how to achieve your career goals really won’t matter. That is why the first tip we have to help you achieve your personal career goals is for you to set the goals. From the moment you enter college, you should be asking yourself, "What are my career goals?" Do you want to own your own business? Become a doctor? Travel the world while writing? Figuring out your field of interest is crucial to helping set yourself up for success. If you find that you could see yourself doing a few different things, then your freshman year should revolve around learning about those areas and seeing which you like best. That way, come sophomore year, you can dive right into your major and continue your first step toward reaching your career goals: getting a degree.

2. There Are Two Kinds of Goals to Set: Short-Term & Long-Term

The next tip we have for you is to develop short and long-term goals. You can’t expect to get too far if you only focus on one or the other. Short-term goals will ultimately lead you to your long-term goals so write down expectations for the month, the year and five years from now. If you are still in school, talk to the career planners they have on campus or your professors who work in or have worked in your field of interest. If you already have a job, talk to your boss about mentoring opportunities and ask what he or she has done to get to where he or she is now. Showing the important people in your life that you have passion and determination will go a long way towards helping you achieve your career goals.

3. Network, Network, Network

Next, make sure you attend events in your industry and network, network, network! Meeting others in your field can help you with your goal setting because it can open your mind to ideas you never thought of before. Networking is so important, especially in today’s work force because, sadly, no job is ever safe, and that is where your network comes in. If you have a lot of "friends" you will likely find yourself with a new job sooner rather than later. The more people you know, the easier it will be for you to get your resume out there and seen. Therefore, attend industry meetings and develop relationships with other professionals as often as possible.

4. Be Flexible!

Finally, be prepared to make changes. Goals are needed in order to truly be successful. However, sometimes due to life events or unexpected business changes, your goals can be altered or thrown off course. If something like that happens, you need to recognize the situation, figure out what your next course of action should be and keep pressing on. No matter who you are or where you come from, life can be a roller coaster of events at times so set personal and career goals for yourself and if something gets in the way of you accomplishing one of your goals, find another way to make it happen.
